How to organise your garage
The hardest part of organising your garage? Getting started! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the task at hand, use these tips to alleviate your stress.
- Visualise your plan of attack, or better yet, write it down.
- Take stock of everything in there and make a mental note of what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.
- Don’t attempt it all in one day. Give yourself enough time - a weekend or two should do the trick.
- Turn it into a family activity or invite a few friends over to pitch in. It’ll go a lot faster.
- Go through everything. And we mean EVERYTHING. Don’t be tempted to chuck items into an ‘I’ll deal with that later’ box.
Sort all your items into four piles - keep, donate, sell and throw away. Lay them on dedicated tarps or mark off areas of your driveway and place them there.
HOT TIP: Old toys, expired household chemicals, broken items or anything you haven’t used in two years should go straight into the bin. Remember to recycle where possible! Check out Tufferman’s recycling and waste bins HERE.
Whatever you choose to keep can be sorted into broad categories, like ‘sports’, ‘tools’ or ‘gardening’. Place them in marked boxes or stackable containers.
Get a storage system
The easiest and quickest way to gain that precious extra space in your garage is to introduce a storage system. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive - it just needs to be sustainable so you can continue to keep your garage neat and tidy.
If you use your garage for handy work or DIY projects, we recommend getting a workbench. A workbench gives you a dedicated space where you can work and store your tools.
Tufferman stocks a range of industrial and residential workbenches made from high grade, powder-coated European steel. They also have strong chipboard shelving and worktops, which combine to offer outstanding rigidity, strength and durability.

Bins and plastic storage boxes
Bins and plastic storage boxes are an absolute must for any garage. Take stock of the items you want to keep and purchase a range of sizes to accommodate large items and small ‘odds and ends’, like nuts, bolts and screws.
All of our storage boxes and bins are made from high quality, durable plastic - so they won’t break or split when you move heavy contents. The storage box lids not only ensure that contents are kept dry and dust-free, but they also add rigidity, allowing the storage boxes to be stacked upon each other.
Install a tool rack
When it comes to clever storage, tool racks and pegboard panels can turn every wall into a space-saving opportunity.
Rather than leaning your lawn tools against the wall, place shovels, rakes, pruning shears and other garden go-to’s on a wall rack. It will save space and look much neater - not to mention remind you to do all that yard work you’ve been putting off.
For smaller items, like tools, a wall-mounted tool racks will do quite nicely. Our wall mounted tool rack/organiser with bins is ideal for tidying up those loose tools in garages, sheds and workshops. Made from tough, impact and moisture-resistant polypropylene, this tool rack is strong enough to handle anything you throw at it. And thanks to it being pre-drilled for wall fixing, installing our wall mounted tool rack is a breeze.

Go vertical with garage shelving
When you can’t go wider, go up! Installing metal shelving in your garage is the quickest and easiest way to save space and optimise your garage.
Open and unrestricted garage shelving is a great solution for messy garages - you can easily identify and grab what you need, when you need it.
Our metal shelving comes in a range of designs, sizes and varying weight limits. Metal shelves are one of the more durable shelving types on the market, as they can withstand weight, changes to temperatures and moisture. And thankfully, Tufferman shelves are generally easy to construct and require minimal tools to put together. That’s because they have a boltless construction design. So anyone can put these shelves together. You’ll be on your way to an organised garage in no time.
